Glyptothek

Glyptothek was built to house the extensive collection of sculptures from Greece and Italy acquired by Bavarian King Ludwig I in the early 1800s. It is included in resplendent Museum Quarter of Munich, alongside such illustrious structures as Lenbach House, Brandhorst museum and the two Pinakothek museums.

Glyptothek’s architecture follows the grand Classical Greek-Italian style with its Ionic columns The layout of the halls presents the iconic sculptures in chronological order; hence visitors will find pieces from the Archaic Age to the Roman era. The museum’s acquisition list is a bountiful treasure trove of ancient finds including Munich Kouros, Medusa Rondanini, Barberini Faun and several Roman busts such as those of Emperor Augustus, Nero and Septimius Severus.

A colossal replica of Apollo from a Tuscan villa is also part of the collections.
It is interesting to note that Glyptothek’s sculptures complement the terracotta and bronze attractions of the museum opposite it, which is the State Collection of Greek and Roman Antiquities.
