Gmina Zwierzyniec is an urban-rural “gmina”- administrative district- in Zamosc County, Lublin Voivodeship, in eastern Poland. It lies 30 km from Zamosc, 95 km from Lublin and 260 km from the capital city, Warsaw. It covers an area of almost 157 km2, and is inhabited by 7406 people, of whom 3476 live in the city.
Zwierzyniec is situated at an altitude of 222 m above sea level on the river Roztoczu Srodkowym, and more than two thirds of the area is covered by forests. Gmina Zwierzyniec neighbours the gminas of Adamów, Józefów, Krasnobród, Radecznica, Szczebrzeszyn, Tereszpol and Zamosc.
Zwierzyniec was established in 1593 in the Szczebrzeskiej estate, included in the Zamoyski by its founder, chancellor Jan Zamoyski. The Nazis organized a camp in Zwierzyniec for French prisoners of war. At the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth in Zwierzyniec became a fashionable summer resort.
Gmina Zwierzyniec is an important industrial center. The community is newly interested in further development of tourism and small-scale trading and services. Center of Culture and Recreation offers information about Zwierzyniec and Roztocze, accommodation, vacancies.
Although it is a small region there are some monuments to visit: Church of John of Nepomuk, built in 1741 – 1747, wooden belfry tower, Figure of Our Lady of Lourdes, The brewery- 1806, the Jewish Cemetery.
Also hiking is available in the area with 5 important routes recommended. the most beautiful trail is Trail edge Mites offerin attractive places like: forest settlement Florianka, Górecko Church and Reserve Field Devil.
Zwierzyniec is also involved in international project to establish The International Biosphere Reserve Acari. The reservation will be based on existing protected areas like Roztoczanski National Park, landscape parks and nature reserves.
