Gnigl is a district in the northeastern city of Salzburg, Austria, which lies between the Kühberg in the south and Heuberg at north. In the west is limited by the Tauern railway line. In Gnigl live about 6,000 people.
The name comes from the Celtic word Gnigl Glanicle. It means clean water, and is possibly an ancient name of the old stream that flows through Gnigl. An economic boom took place after the construction of the railway after 1860. Gnigl was largely incorporated in 1935 in the state capital.
After the Second World War in the northern part of Gnigl was installed an industrial park.
Not until December 2003 there was also a passenger station, which was replaced under the project, transport S-Bahn Salzburg by a modern bus stop. The suburban trains stop at 30 minutes intervals. The journey to Central Station is 6 minutes. Furthermore, in Gnigl the trolleybus routes, the bus lines 20, 23 and several regional bus lines are available.
The church stands at the edge of the historic center of Obergnigl. The present cemetery was set Gnigler under Archbishop Johann Ernst von Thun was built, probably just as an extension to the existing chapel.
Neuhaus Castle is the oldest well-preserved in the core structure of Gnigl. The castle is first mentioned in 1219 under Konrad von Neuhaus. Castle Minnesheimstraße is another attraction in the area but largely lost its former character by the profound transformation in 1888.
