Goethe Home and Museum

Frankfurt’s most celebrated son is Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, whose family home has become a major tourist destination in the city’s Old Town. His pivotal works on philosophy, poetry, drama and other genres made him one of the formidable writers in German literature. Goethe Home and Museum celebrates the life and times of the author.

The house consists of three storeys with each one showing details of different periods in Goethe’s life and his family. The interiors are a pleasant rendition of different themes such as Baroque Frankfurt-style, Rococo and Roman influences. A number of paintings created by different Frankfurt artists are also part of the house’s attractions as Goethe’s father was an avid art collector. Other noteworthy features of the home include the puppet mini-theatre from which Goethe drew inspiration of his creative plays and his Writing Room.

Goethe Museum, on the other hand, presents fine art that has further influenced Goethe’s life and works. Visitors can see samples from various Frankfurt artists whose talents flourished in varying periods such as Late Baroque, Romanticism, Classicism and the Biedermeir. It is connected to the Goethe House by lift and stairs. The entire wing offers 14 galleries.
