Goethe House

Goethe House in Weimar was the home of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe from 1782 until the time of his death in 1832. It is now a restored mansion, built in Baroque style, and also houses Goethe National Museum.

The famous writer moved to Weimar upon the invitation of the grand duke Carl Augustus. From then on, his fascination with Classicism started and a friendship with a fellow writer Friedrich Schiller developed into regular discourse giving birth to Weimar Classicism. This literary movement became a preeminent school of thought in the 19th century, earning both support and criticism.

The Baroque mansion is, undoubtedly, the ultimate repository of Goethe’s creative expressions. The interiors are filled with paintings and Classical statues. Goethe’s treasury of books is kept in the upstairs study, along with some 2,000 drawings. This study is the same place where he laboured over his most famous play, the two-part Faust. The Goethe and Schiller Archives look after his literary estate. In fact, Goethe House is only 1 of 22 public museums in Weimar dedicated to the writer.
