It's the truth for travelers in Recife, where the most ornate and bedazzled building in town is the Golden Chapel, or Capela Dourada in Portuguese. Definitely not a building that would ever be described as modest, the Golden Chapel is a stunning baroque church with gold everywhere, including on the altar.

For visitors, the draw isn't just the gold, but the incredible architecture and small touches, like some of the most beautiful tile work in the whole city. The ceiling includes a beautiful painting, and the building's exterior is also highly photographed.

Golden Chapel still has services to this day, and is also the home of the Franciscan Museum of Sacred Art, which is worth a visit for those travelers particularly enamored by both art history and religious works.

The Golden Chapel is open daily, but closes in the early afternoon. Monday through Friday, the hours are from 8:00am until 11:30am and from 2:00pm until 5:00pm, and on Saturday, the church is open from 8:00am until 11:30am only. The church is reserved for worship on Sundays.
