This massive suspension bridge, constructed during the Great Depression of the 1930s (finished in 1937), had the largest suspension bridge span in the world when it was completed, and currently ranks 9th globally, 2nd within the US.

With a total length of 8,981 feet and a maximum individual span of 4,200 feet, the deck of the bridge lies some 220 feet above the level of the ocean water below. Constituting one of the major public works projects of the Depression era, astonishingly the bridge was completed in only 4 years and more than $1 million within the allowed budget.
