The Golden State Theater is located on 417 Alvarado Street. Established in 1926, the theater was the top movie palace in the area for decades. Today, it has many performances, ranging from spoken word to singers and comedians.

Designed by the Reid Brothers architectural firm, the theater was a manifestation of the early boom times of Monterey. Created in the style of a Moorish castle, the theater could hold 25% of the population in Monterey at the time (1,600 people), in the tradition of the grandest movie palaces. Renovations in 1992 brought back the classic pipe organ, making it a functioning Wurlitzer once again. The newest owner has completed a more thorough restoration of the theater, which now recalls its former glory. Performers like Garrison Keillor, Bill Cosby, Willie Nelson and K.D. Lang now regularly grace the stage at the Golden State Theater. Classic movies are also on the regular lineup.

Tickets can be purchased online or at the theater box office. Parking is available on the street or in garages on Tyler Street and Calle Principal.
