In addition to providing a break from city life and a nice green space to appreciate nature, some of the parks in Columbus also have quite a rich history behind them. Perhaps the most historically significant park in the entire city is Goodale Park, which was donated to the city for public use in 1851 by Dr. Lincoln Goodale, a distinguished leader from The Revolutionary War, and a true philanthropist. The park was actually the site of Union troops during The Civil War, and plays a big part in a lot of the history of Columbus.

Today, you're more likely to see picnicking young couples and romping children and dogs than you are anything remotely military. One of the biggest music festivals the city has, ComFest, takes place in the park each year. A group, The Friends of Goodale Park have gathered data on every single tree in the park, and happily report 650 trees that currently exist, as well as information on their ages and species type.

Goodale Park is open year-round during the daylight hours, and is located right north of downtown Columbus. A number of hotels are located close to the park, including The Hyatt Regency Columbus, The Crowne Plaza Hotel Columbus Downtown, and The Hampton Inn and Suites Downtown.
