Gormanstown Castle

Hotels near Gormanstown Castle, Drogheda, Ireland .

The Gormanstown Castle is located a few kilometers south of Drogheda, Ireland. The castle was built in 1768 by Sir Jelico Preston on the site where the original Castle stood, dating back from 1372. The castle has a fine quadrangular structure; a turret sits atop each of the castle's corners except for the north-west corner.
According to popular legend, when the head of the Gormanston family was on his dead bed, all the foxes of Meath would come and sit at the entrance of the castle as a vigil until his lordship had passed away.

The castle was extended by the Franciscan Fathers in the in 1950s who presently utilise it as a boys' secondary school.
