Gorton
Gorton is an area of the city of Manchester, in North West England.
The name “Gorton” means “dirty farmstead”, a name taken from the Gore Brook, or dirty brook, which still runs through the township to-day. The brook acquired its name because of the dirty appearance of its water. During the Middle Ages the district was a township of the ancient parish of Manchester in the Salford Hundred of Lancashire.
West Gorton was included in the City of Manchester in late 19th century. The remainder of Gorton was included only in 1909, thanks to the work of Chairman of Gorton Urban District Council.
In Gorton sits The Gorton Monastery, a Franciscan, built in the 19th century, and High Victorian Gothic monastery. In recent years it has been renovated and has been secularised after it was previously derelict with the friars moving out. Gorton also hosts the Brookfield Unitarian Church on Hyde Road, built by Richard Peacock.
In 2006, Manchester City Council started the innovation of the Gorton District Shopping Centre by a multi-million-pound redevelopment plan. The small market and retail area was demolished till July 2008, when the new Manchester Gorton Market Hall was opened to the public.
Gorton railway station opened way back in 1842. Gorton was the home of the Beyer-Peacock locomotive Company at Gorton Foundry, from 1854, until it closed in 1966Gorton is also home to the Greater Manchester Police, Tactical Firearms Unit based at Openshaw Police Station.
