Located on the Swedish island of Gotland, on the outskirts of the UNESCO world heritage city Visby, the Gotska golf club was founded in 1986.
Back then players played on a 9-hole course, but 1996 saw the opening of the club’s 18-hole course bearing the name Jack Wenman banana, after its founder, the famous golfer Jack Wenman. The course is literally next door to Visby airport making it an easy stop for oversea travelers.
The course terrain consists of open heathland, but the tricky layout and the wind makes the course more difficult to tackle than perhaps first anticipated. Par is 69 and the yellow course is 5127 m long and the red 4440 m.
On site there is a café, pub, golf shop, driving range facilities, fitness area and locker rooms with showers. It is advisable to book in advance in the summer months, the winter months however are less busy.
The Hanseatic town of Visby is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Scandinavia and offers a range of hotels. Among them is Hotell Villa Borgen (1.1miles) whose central location on the town’s main shopping street makes it an ideal starting point for sightseeing. Room rates start at SEK565. A more expensive alternative is Hotel 1 (1.2 miles) with rates at SEK850. Hotel 1 has a fantastic view over the Baltic Sea and the historic city park, Almedalen, and it features exclusive bathroom design.
