The Government House of Salvador is located in the neighborhood of Ondina. Locally known as the Casa do Governador or Palacio Ondina, the palace moved to Ondina in 1967. Facing crowded streets and overwhelming traffic, the government decided to move to a more tranquil, residential neighborhood and chose Ondina as a natural replacement. Known as a luxury neighborhood, Ondina is the spot for the Fedral University of Bahia campus. The neighborhood itself was conceived of as a way to relieve the overcrowding of Barra during Carnaval time. Today, some of the key events of Carnaval (especially the end) are held in Ondina. Alto Ondina, site of the Governors house, is the most exclusive zone of Ondina.
