The Granada Cathedral is the cathedral located in the city of Granada, Spain. The cathedral was constructed in 1492 after the acquisition of the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada from its Muslim rulers. The construction of the church took place when Renaissance designs were supplanting the Gothic designs in Spanish architecture which had been dominant in prior centuries. The foundations of the church were laid by the architect Egas on the site where the city's main mosque stood; however, in 1529, Egas was replaced by Diego de Siloé who worked on the structure for the following four decades. Diego de Siloé created a circular capilla mayor instead of a semicircular apse; he probably got his inspiration from Italian ideas for circular buildings. The interior of the cathedral combines other orders of architecture. The Cathedral took 181 years to be completely built. The Cathedral was intended to become the royal mausoleum by Charles I of Spain; however, Phillip II of Spain moved the site for his father and subsequent kings to El Escorial outside of Madrid. The interior of the main chapel contains two kneeling effigies of the Catholic King and Queen, Isabel and Ferdinand; these were created by Pedro de Mena y Medrano.
