There's more to Galveston, Texas than just down-home cooking and endless stretches of sandy beaches. There's also a great deal of culture, too, and one of the most popular spots in town is none other than the Grand 1894 Opera House.

More than just a historic theater, the Grand 1894 Opera House is currently a not-for-profit performing arts center, as well as one of the many historic places registered on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Originally built in the late 1800s by Henry Greenwall, the opera house has managed to weather the elements time and time again.

Its first trial was The Galveston Hurricane of 1900, and it has somehow stayed standing through everything else that came afterwards. Though the Grand 1894 Opera House started out as an opera house, it's had a number of identities throughout the years, including some time as a movie theater for most of the 20th century.

After undergoing an extensive renovation that last almost 30 years, the theater was converted into a space for the performing arts. It hosts a number of theater productions each year, including both plays and musicals, and is also a popular spot for the occasional concert.

Hours at the Grand 1894 Opera House vary depending on what performances are scheduled. It's also open during the city's ArtWalk event.
