Grand Canal

Hotels near Grand Canal, Dublin, Ireland .

The Grand Canal is the southernmost pair of canals that connect Dublin with the River Shannon. The canal was built in the 18th century. The last cargo barge that passed through the Grand Canal was in 1960. The Grand Canal reflects the example of excellent engineering skills of the period. The towpath on either side of the canal has a rustic character, there are small brick houses with terraces on the towpath including, wildfowl and swans on the water, and a number of 18th century curved bridges. The plan to connect Dublin to the Shannon was proposed in 1715; however, it was not until 1757 that permission and £20,000 were granted to Thomas Omer by the Irish Parliament for the construction of a canal. The Grand Canal Company was established in 1772, to ensure the future of the canal and to draw-up and implement plans to overcome the “Bog of Allen” which was the biggest barrier to the canal. The total cost of building the Grand Canal amounted to £877,000. Today, the Grand Canal begins at the Liffey River in Grand Canal Dock and goes through to the River Shannon with a link that extends to the River Barrow Waterway at Athy.
