The Grand Canal is the largest canal in Venice, Italy and forms one of the major water-traffic corridors in the city. Though Public transport is provided by private water taxis and water buses, many tourists prefer to take the gondola. At one end the canal leads into the lagoon near Santa Lucia railway station and the other end leads into Saint Mark Basin.
The Grand Canal is in the shape of a large “S” that passes right through the central districts ("sestieri") of Venice. The Grand Canal is 3,800 meters long and 30-90 meters wide in several places, with an average depth of five meters. The banks of the Grand Canal are lined with over 170 beautiful buildings, most of which date between the 13th and 18th century, these buildings demonstrate the welfare and art created by the Republic of Venice.
From the 19th century there has been only one bridge- the Rialto Bridge, that crosses the Grand Canal since most of the city's traffic goes right along the Canal rather than across it. Today, there are two more bridges, the Ponte degli Scalzi and the Ponte dell'Accademia that have been built across the canal. Another bridge (Ponte della Costituzione) designed by Santiago Calatrava, which was a controversial, was recently erected. This fourth bridge connects the train station to the vehicle-open area of Piazzale Roma. However, as usual in the past, it is still possible and popular to take a ferry ride across the canal at several points by standing up on the deck of a simple gondola called traghetto.
