The Grand Palace is not just one castle that lords over Chao Phraya River. It is an amazing cluster of temples and royal residences within a complex, some of which are used as Royal offices hence prohibited from public viewing.

Although the King no longer lives inside the Grand Palace, a visit can impart a heightened sense of awe from seeing the gilded temples and magnificent structures. There are three major highlights inside Grand Palace. Wat Phra Kaew houses the Emerald Buddha. Phra Tinang Chakri Maha Prasat fascinates with its Italian Renaissance style architecture. It is considered as the focal point of the Grand Palace. The Throne hall is used for official ceremonies welcoming foreign heads of state. There is a shrine room that houses the ashes of former Kings as well.

The Grand Palace is open everyday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. but is closed during special ceremonies. Taking the Chao Phraya River boats is the best way to access the complex. The pier is just a few steps away from Grand Palace.
