With more than 100 years of history and eight active branches, the Grand Rapids Public Library offers both the book worm and the internet surfer a wide range of opportunities to dive into a world of knowledge. Founded in 1871, it was first located within the City Hall, but moved to the Ryerson Building, named for its benefactor, in 1904. In 1967, the Keeler wing was added, doubling the physical size of the main branch of the library. The mixture of old and new styles of architecture is an added feature of this site. In 2004, the cornerstone box, buried with the construction of the library, was opened ant the documents inside provided a glimpse of turn-of-the-century life in Grand Rapids. Continuing community support has enabled all branches to expand their offerings and become fully wheel-chair accessible. Dewey's Retreat is a café located on Level 3 of the Library, and offers a menu of soups, sandwiches, snacks, drinks, and sweet treats.

Additional branches include the Madison Square Branch, the Ottawa Hills Branch, the Seymour Branch, the Van Belkum Branch, the West Leonard Branch, the West Side Branch and Yankee Clipper Branch. While you need to be a resident with a library card to check out books, all are welcome to enjoy the wealth of knowledge and events, such as book readings, that the library offers. Hours are Monday to Thursday 9am to 9pm, Friday and Saturday 9am to 6pm, and Sundays from 1pm to 5pm (but only in the summer).
