Since in 1896 Grand View University, home of the Grand View Vikings, has been an important educational institution in Des Moines, Iowa. A four-year, liberal-arts college, it offers 36 majors to around 2,000 undergraduate students. The school is affiliated as an Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The process of changing the school name began recently, as it used to be Grand View College- to get rid of the perception it still serves its past function as a two year school.

Although the students are technically Vikings, “Bud the Bird” is known as the school’s mascot. Stolen from a gas station early in the school’s history, Bud has been passed amongst student groups ever since- with several new Bud reincarnations taking place over the years. Students also keep up with the tradition of “The Rock,” set in front of the Humphrey Center. Painted under cover of night, it is used as a form of expression, protest, or is sometimes simply used to announce events.
