Hotels near Grassalkovich Palace, Bratislava, Slovakia .

The Grassalkovich Palace is located in Bratislava, Slovakia. It is the residence of the president of Slovakia and is situated next to the Summer Archbishop's Palace. The Palace is a Rococo/late Baroque summer styled palace with a French garden. The Palace was built in 1760 for Count Antal Grassalkovich, a Hungarian noble serving as the head of the Hungarian Chamber. The building was built by architect Anton Mayerhofer. The Palace features several beautiful rooms including an extraordinary staircase.
The building played an important role in musical life in Pozsony/Pressburg. Joseph Haydn premiered some of his works here. Some of the others who used the place for their musical programs include Count Grassalkovich, Prince Esterházy, Maria Theresa. Ludovít Štúr is supposed to have proposed to Adela Ostrolúcka, his love for the first time during a ball organized by Archduke Stephen Francis Victor.
The palace was the seat of the president of the First Slovak Republic during 1939 – 1945. During the Communist era, the palace was used as the seat of the Council of Commissioners, which was a quasi-government of Slovakia. In 1950, the palace was transformed into the "Klement Gottwald House of Pioneers and Youth", which was an activity center for Bratislava's schoolchildren, all of whom were so-called pioneers at that time. The schoolchildren caused extensive damage to the palace, which necessitated a major renovation project to be undertaken, this became following the transition from Communism in late 1989 with the Velvet Revolution.
On the 30th of September 1996, the palace became the residence of the President of Slovakia. The large gardens which were at one time part of the palace are now a public park.
