Located in the small town of Hatteras Village, the southernmost community on all of Haterass Island, North Carolina, the museum's location itself is a prime spot for many important events in the surrounding ocean. After an hour of learning about shipwrecks, even the most jaded adult will have a childlike sense of wonder.

The name of the museum refers to the area around The Outer Banks of North Carolina, were a number of ships have sunk throughout the ages due to either terrible weather, battles with pirates, or war-related efforts. Hundreds of ships litter the ocean floor close to the museum, but inside, a number of recovered artifacts sit dry in cases, for the public to examine them.

Some of the most famous artifacts in the museum include a Nazi enigma machine from a German U-Boat that was sunk off the coast of North Carolina in the 1940s. A number of other exciting artifacts are also in the museum, as well as extremely informative and interesting exhibitions on everything from World War II submarine attacks to famous pirates who operated in those waters.

The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum is open from Monday through Friday, ten until four. Best of all, admission is free for everyone.
