Graz Opera House

Hotels near Graz Opera House, Graz, Austria .

The Graz Opera House is the second largest opera house in Austria. It was built in 1899 by architects Helmer and Fellner; these were famous architects who had successfully built buildings all over Europe. Initially the Opera House in Graz was the municipal theatre and was not used exclusively for music.
The first program to be held in the Opera House on the 16th of September 1899 was the “Wilhelm Tell”, Schiller’s drama. During the Second World War, a bomb exploded destroying the original portico completely. Luckily enough, the other parts of the Opera house remained unscathed.
The Opera house can seat 1800 members in its audience. Talented composer Robert Stolz and conductor Karl Bohm are some of the musicians to have graced the Opera house with their performances. To commemorate the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America, the opera "Amerika" by Roman Haubenstock-Ramati was performed in the opera house.
