The prestigious Town Hall in Graz with its clock, corner towers and dome has taken center-stage in Graz from the late 19th century. The town hall is the seat of the mayor and the city administration including an open air café and several shops which add flavor and bring additional life to the building. Several couples have romantic memories of the town hall having taken their marriage vows here.
Sometime around the year 1550, the city administration moved into a small humble town hall in Hauptplatz, this building also served as a prison. In the year 1803 the building was replaced by a new and larger town hall.
With the rapid growth in population during the 19th century, a new town hall was needed and the construction of today's town hall which was planned by the Viennese architects Wielemans and Reuter. All the houses of the block had to be destroyed in order to make room for the old-style German building. The town hall was completed in 1893.
There are many romantic locations in Graz but only in the wedding hall of the town hall it is possible for friends and family all over the world to watch the marriage ceremony live via a webcam.
