Opened in September 2004, the Great Ape Trust of Iowa is a world-class research center founded around the principals of scientific research, conservation, and education. The Great Ape Trust has the distinction of being the largest great ape research facility in North America. The 230-acre ape sanctuary and language study facility, set amongst lowlands, riverine forest, and lakes, aims to form a more complete understanding of Great Ape language use, culture, tool use, and intelligence. Species found at the facility include Bonobos and Orangutans, and will be one of just a few in the world to include all for types of great ape, including chimpanzees and gorillas. Set about 5 miles southeast of Des Moines downtown district, hometown boy and Iowan Ted Townsend, is the founder of the Great Ape Trust.
