Hamilton Island Airport, renamed Great Barrier Reef Airport, is the main airport of the Whitsunday Islands.

The airport greatly suffered in September 2001 with the downfall of Ansett Australia and in October 2002 by a plane crash shortly after its take off. Eventually, Hamilton Island became one of Australia’s favorite tourist destinations. The airport then was utilized to cater to the increasing number of tourists.

Great Barrier Reef Airport is serviced by Virgin Blue and Jetstar Airways with flights from Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane. Qantas on the other hand is from Cairns with both domestic and international connecting flights. The airport’s arrival and departure lounge is not as grand or big as any other airport but provides the travelers with comfort and a relaxing feeling. Arrangements can be made for luggage to be collected by the island taxi or bus service and taken directly to the place of accommodation.
