The Great Costal Gate stands as a great defensive structure at the north end of Pikk Street in Tallinn, Estonia. The gate was built defend the city from the sea and today it is a popular tourist spot impressing its visitors.
The Great Coastal Gate is one of the six gates that controlled access to the town in medieval times. The gate was built from 1511 to 1530, during the 16th century the gate underwent major reconstruction and the Fat Margaret cannon tower were added. The cannon tower is 25 meters in diameter, 20 meters in height with walls up to 5 meters thick.
No one knows how the cannon towers came to be called ‘Fat Margaret', till today this remains a mystery. Some theories insist it was named for one of its larger cannons, while others hint at a cook called Margaret who once worked here. The tower has been of use in a number of ways throughout its history; as a storehouse for gunpowder, weapons and even as a prison.
Today the Great Costal Gate is home to the Estonian Maritime Museum, which provides a detailed look at the nation's seafaring past. It is possible for visitors to climb up to its rooftop viewing platform to get a beautiful view of Old Town and the bay.
