One of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, The Great Pyramid of Giza is the only surviving wonder of the ancient world. It was built in 2560 B.C. as a tomb for Egyptian King Khufu. The Great Pyramid is also known as the Pyramid of Khufu or the Pyramid of Cheops. It is the largest of three pyramids found in the Giza Necropolis. It is located about ten miles west of Cairo and stands on the edge of the Giza Plateau.

The Great Pyramid was built over a twenty year period and for 3,800 years was considered the tallest structure ever made by man. There are three chambers that have been discovered inside the pyramid. The lowest chamber was built into the bedrock of the structure and is unfinished. The other two chambers are the Grand Gallery which leads to the King’s Chamber and the last is the Queen’s Chambers.

It is built with over two-and-a-half million blocks of limestone and its base is 13,000 acres wide and 454 feet high. The total mass or weight of the Great Pyramid is 5.9 million tons. The entrance to the Pyramid is through a tunnel dug by Caliph Al-Mamum and his men around 820 AD. Near the great pyramids are some small pyramids that were built for Khufu’s successor and son Kephren, and other pyramids made for Khufu’s wives.
