Unfortunately, hurricanes aren't so exotic in Galveston, Texas. Ever since the city's inception, it's been something of a hurricane target, due to its unique geological location. The most recent storm to wreak havoc on the tiny island was Ike, whose powerful winds changed some of the beaches landscapes and warranted a great deal of clean-up.

But Ike isn't even close to the most memorable storm to hit the shores of Galveston. That honor belongs to The Great Storm of 1900, which hit on September 8, 1900, and was so intense that the ocean literally covered the island from the Gulf side to the Bay side.

For weather aficionados, history buffs, and anyone who is interested in science, there's a way to experience The Great Storm even now, so many years later. In one of the most unique spaces on the island, there is The Great Storm Theater. Its purpose? To provide today's visitors with a recreation of that historic storm.

Open daily from eleven in the morning until six in the evening, except on Friday and Saturday nights when closing time is eight instead, this unique attraction draws crowds of Texans and tourists alike.

Located in the town's theater district, a number of hotels are just a short walk from The Great Storm Theater, including The Commodore on the Beach, The Flagship Hotel, and The Wyndham Hotel.
