Second in size only to the Theater in Syracuse, the Greek Theater in Taormina is one of the largest ancient theaters in Sicily, Italy.
The ancient theatre is one of the most celebrated ruins in Sicily, on account both of its remarkable preservation and of the surpassing beauty of its position.
It is constructed for the most part of brick, and is therefore probably of Roman date, though the plan and arrangement are in accordance with those of Greek theatres so it is supposed that the present structure was rebuilt upon the foundations of an older theatre of the Greek period. With a span of 109 meters, this theatre is the second largest of its kind in Sicily and is frequently used for theatrical performances and for concerts.
The biggest part of the original seats has disappeared, but the wall which surrounded the whole "cavea"(auditorium seating) is preserved. The proscenium with the back wall of the scene and its appendages, of which only traces remain in most ancient theatres, are here preserved in very good, and contribute much to the picturesque effect, as well as to the interest, of the ruin.
The theater is located at the very top of a hill, levelled for the purpose, using the natural incline of the valley for the "cavea".
The remains of a small temple stand near the theater. Ruins of an arcade, once leading to the theater, stand at the top of the auditorium. Scenery consisted of nine columns, raised and positioned in their original place during the theater's restoration in the Eighteen Hundreds.
Also, the majestic panorama, combined with a spectacular view of Etna and the Calabrian mountains, are good reasons for a visit even in our days.
