The Greektown Historic District, in Detroit, Michigan, is so named because it was founded by a group of Greek immigrants in the 1830s. These Greeks were from the Peloponnesos region in the South and they opened many restaurants, coffee houses, bakeries and grocery stores in the neighborhood. For a while, the district was both residential and commercial; however, today, it is mostly a commercial center. Although many of the original Greek residents left in the 1960’s after Greektown was reduced to just one city block, their buildings and heritage remain. Today the area consists mostly of one block where local Greeks have banded together to celebrate their traditions and lifestyle. The area is populated by Greek restaurants and shops; there’s also a yearly Greek festival.
