Green-Meldrim House

Hotels near Green-Meldrim House, Savannah (Georgia), United States .

Savannah is a beautiful and historic city, and there's no shortage, especially in the old Downtown, of houses that will make visitors practically swoon. It seems like everyone who visits falls a little in love with Savannah, and it's not uncommon for Yankees to be so swayed by Southern hospitality that they actually make the move permanent.

One of the prime examples of the beautiful Gothic Revival architecture throughout the city's downtown squares is over on West Macon Street. Here stands one of the crown jewels of mansions in the city, the Green-Meldrim House. The most expensive house in the entire city when it was built over 200 years ago, it's at once stunning without being ostentatious.

Overlooking Madison Square, the Green-Meldrim House was designed by a New York architect for a British man who had just recently moved to Savanna. A true rags to riches story, Charles Green managed to make a handsome living during his time in Savannah, after arriving with little more than the clothes on his back.

A National Historic Landmark since the 1970s, the Green-Meldrim House has daily tours, and is open on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from ten until four and on Saturday from ten until one. A number of historic downtown hotels and inns are just a short walk away, including the Eliza Thompson House, the Hilton Savannah DeSoto, and the Foley House Inn.
