The Greensboro Amtrak Station is located in the heart of downtown as part of the Galyon Transportation Center. The spacious station was originally constructed in 1927 as the Greensboro Southern Railway Depot. Between 1978 and 2005 no trains passed through the station. Though efforts to return service to the old station date as far back as 1993, it wasn't reopened to the public until October 1, 2005. The station was used to be located at the main rail yard almost two miles to the west of downtown. It is served by three passenger trains, the Crescent, which runs from New York to New Orleans, the Carolinian which runs from New York to Charlotte, and the Piedmont which runs from Raleigh, North Carolina to Charlotte, North Carolina. 89,675 passengers pass through each year.

The station and ticketing counter is open 24 hours per day and has shops and restaurants. There are many hotels close to the station in downtown Greensboro, including the Hilton Garden Inn, Holiday Inn Express, and the Hyatt Place.
