Greenwich is a district in south-east London, England, located on the south bank of the River Thames in the London Borough of Greenwich. It is best known for its maritime history and for giving its name to the Greenwich Meridian - 0° longitude and Greenwich Mean Time-GMT. The town became a popular resort in the 17th century when many grand houses were built, such as Vanbrugh castle.
Greenwich is framed by Deptford Creek and Deptford to the west; the former industrial centre of the Greenwich Peninsula, and the residential area of Westcombe Park to the east; the river Thames to the north; and the A2 and Blackheath common to the south.
The town became the site of a Royal palace, the Palace of Placentia from the 15th century, and was the birthplace of many royalties, including Henry VIII and Elizabeth I.
The Cutty Sark which is a clipper ship has been preserved in a dry dock by the river. Nowadays is used as a museum ship, being a popular tourist attraction, and part of the National Historic Fleet, Core Collection. It was built in 1869, serving as a merchant vessel.
The O2 - formerly the famous Millennium Dome was built on a disused British Gas site on the Greenwich Peninsula.
Near the Cutty Sark site, a circular building is located containing an entrance to the Greenwich foot tunnel, opened on 4 August 1902. This links Greenwich with Isle of Dogs.
Behind the former Naval College lies the National Maritime Museum. Moving to south lies Greenwich Park, a Royal Park of 0.7 km2. Georgian and Victorian architecture dominates the town’s centre which spreads to the west of the park and Royal Naval college.
Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) is a term originally referring to mean solar time at the Royal Observatory located in Greenwich too.
