Genoa Cristoforo Colombo Airport (GOA) rests atop the Ligurian Sea on an artificial surface where, ironically, once villagers in the second century AD stacked or piled large stones for the Roman soldiers. It is from this ancient backdrop that the area achieves its historical name, and nickname, Sestri Ponente, from the Latin Sextum.

No other clear records of this man made peninsula exist before the fifteenth century, but it is now a modern marvel and certainly a thriving transportation region located, as it is, just 7 km west of Genoa. This busy airport serves the entire Port of Genoa with most recent statistics showing 1,2000,000 passengers now passing through its terminals a year. In spite of slow trends elsewhere, growth at Genoa Cristoforo Colombo Airport has been climbing at 5-10 % a year.

It is supported by multiple commercial and passenger flights from throughout EU, Africa, and Asia and North America (via connecting flights).

Due to limited parking, it may be wise to arrange onsite car rentals ahead of time though all national car rental brands are represented at the airport. There is excellent support from taxi, bus (Volabus), and train services with the latter frequently upgrading both their equipment and frequency of train schedules to and from the area. Both the city and region is also promoting the use of electric bikes which AMT Genoa is collaborating to support.
