The Groenplaats is one of the most popular places in Antwerp; it is located right in the center of Antwerp’s historic district, close to the cathedral. The Groenplaats is a square filled with several cafés; these café terraces are very popular with both tourists and locals and serve some of the best beer.
Up to the 18th century Groenplaats was the main cemetery in Antwerp. During the Austrian occupation, Emperor Joseph II abolished cemeteries inside the city walls and eventually Groenplaats was converted into a square. However, local residents still continued to call the square 'green cemetery'.
There has been some considerable improvement at the square over the years, a conventional underground parking was built and the old parking building was replaced by a new modern building. The most attractive building on the square is the renovated Grand Bazar of 1920, now a Hilton Hotel.
The square provides a great view of the city's Cathedral, which is located just north of the Groenplaats. It is also the starting place of a tourist tram, which offers a ride along some of the most interesting sights in Antwerp.
