Großer Garten
The Großer Garten (Great Garden) is a park in Dresden, Germany. It covers an area of about 2 km² in a central location of the city. Established in 1676 as a hunting domain, it has been a public garden since 1814. Pathways and alleys are arranged symmetrically throughout its area.
Established outside the old walls of the city, the park was encircled by the significant growth of the urban area in the second half of the 19th century. A miniature railway known as the Parkeisenbahn was developed by the youth organizations of the former German Democratic Republic, commonly known as East Germany in 1950.
The park with its wide-ranging spaces is one of Dresden's most well-liked recovery resorts. The numerous paths which wind their way through the ancient trees are perfect for a relaxing walk, the lake is wonderful for rowers, while the less energetic may like to take a ride within the grounds on the miniature train.
The park also accommodates the zoo, the botanical gardens, a large tropical greenhouse and the Palais im Grossen Garten, a breath-taking 17th century palace complete with pond and courtiers' residence.
Several open-air stages invite the visitor to cultural events, in the palace one can attend concerts, and every once in a while festive balls and fireworks take place in the park.
The Volkswagen's Transparent Factory is the newest building built here and is located at the Straßburger Platz in the northwest corner of the park.
