There are only a few stadiums in the world that have passed the standards that have been set for hosting Olympic Games. One of these few stadiums is the Guangdong Olympic Stadium in the People's Republic of China. The said stadium is known for its versatility in being a multi-purpose stadium, and it is currently being used for football matches and the like.

The structure was built in 2001, and is known for having the maximum capacity of 80,012 multi-colored seats that are grouped into a number of sections, connected together through a ribbon pattern. The said stadium was opened for public use during the 2001 National Games of the People's Republic of China, but it was originally constructed with the aim of helping the country host the Summer Olympics of 2008. Unfortunately, the plan was cancelled since a new decision of constructing the National Stadium in Beijing was made.

When the stadium was constructed, the design of Guangdong Olympic Stadium's sunscreen roof is said to have been patterned to resemble the multiple layers of a flower's petals according to the vision of Ellerbe Becket. It can be seen in the stadium that the roof flows over the seats like a wave, shielding spectators from the heat of the sun.
