First opened in 1984, the Gulf Breeze Zoo, later known as the Zoo Northwest Florida, officially closed its doors in August of 2009. Once the home of over 900 animals, the Zoo was set on over 30 acres, and featured a wide variety of exhibits and activities. After years of suffering financial setbacks, hurricane damage, and poor attendance, the Zoo has closed with hopes of still find an external source of funding to reopen its doors. Staff still tend to the animals daily, although the Zoo is, for now, closed to the public.
