Opened in 1974, the African American Museum (AAM) of Dallas is the sole museum in the southwestern United States dedicated solely to African American art, culture, and history. The AAM is housed in a beautiful ivory stone building located in south Dallas, on the Texas State Fair Grounds, adjacent to the Cotton Bowl athletic stadium.

Permanent exhibits at the African American Museum include the Dallas Black Teachers Hall of Fame, the Sankofa gallery, Freedman’s Cemetery, Black Sports in Texas, and the George Washington Carver exhibit. The AAM hosts a number of community events, such as Music Under the Dome, held on the first Friday of every month, as well as periodically held special events.

The African American Museum is open Tuesday through Friday from noon until 5 P.M., Saturday from 10 A.M. until 5 P.M., and Sundays from 1 P.M. until 5 P.M. Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for children. The AAM is located at 3536 Grand Avenue in Dallas, and does have on site parking free of charge.
