Gurney Drive is a well known seafront promenade located in Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia. It is one of the popular tourist destinations in the region with all the “Hawker Food Stalls” where tourists, visitors, and locals frequent. Some of the main destinations along The Drive is the Gurney Park Condominium, Silverton, Acadia, 11 Gurney Drive, 1 Persian Gurney, Millennium Towers and The Regency.

Gurney Drive was originally named as the New Coast Road. Construction of the place started way back in 1936 named as North Beach at that time. Only in 1952 when the place was given another name by Sir Henry Gurney, the High Commissioner of Malaya between 1950 to 1951. Gurney was later on assassinated during the Malayan Emergency by the Malayan Communist Party.

After several decades, the beaches along Gurney drive were destroyed due to erosion. It was then reclaimed to counter-act the problem. The government and other civic groups planted mangroves to prevent future coastal problems resulting to egrets and other birds to live in among the forests.

Today, aside from the popular destinations along the road, a recreational area was developed with a protected mangrove plantation to help balance the ecosystem.
