Guthrie Theater

Hotels near Guthrie Theater, Minneapolis, United States .

Located at 818 South 2nd Street in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the Guthrie Theater is a performing arts center that originally opened its doors to the public in 1963. The original 1963 structure was demolished in 2006 and since then the theater has been relocated to a larger, improved three-theater facility on the banks of the Mississippi River. The new Guthrie Theater cost a total of $125 million to build and is a major landmark within Minneapolis, with an elegant blue-glass appearnace and distinctive curved edges.

Of the three theaters present in the modern facility, the main thrust stage has a spectator capacity of 1,100, the proscenium stage can seat 700, and the black-box studio has lesser capacity although it is flexible depending on how the stage is set up. All in all, the building takes up 285,000 square feet of land. The building's exterior is, quite uniquely, decked with large photos of leading actors that graced the stage in the past, and constitutes a real show at night. The building is open to the public daily as of 8am; for details regarding show tickets and particular events, visit the Guthrie Theater's homepage at http://www.guthrietheater.org/, or read up on this Minneapolis icon at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guthrie_Theater.

The eastern portion of downtown Minneapolis that surrounds the theater houses various lodging establishments, such as the Aloft Minneapolis, the Residence Inn, and the Hotel Courtyard.
