Hahnenkamm

Hotels near Hahnenkamm, Kitzbuhel, Austria .

The Hahnenkamm is a mountain located in Austria, directly south of Kitzbühel, in the Kitzbühel Alps. The Hahnenkamm is a popular tourist spot and is part of the ski resort of Kitzbühel. This is also the venue of the annual World Cup alpine ski races, the ‘Hahnenkammrennen’.
The downhill course is the most famous slope on the Hahnenkamm; the Streif is regarded by many skiers as the most demanding race course on the World Cup circuit. The course includes several highly technical, "fall-away" turns, many of them with limited visibility. There are several flat gliding sections that come right ahead of the difficult turns, placing a premium on both technical and gliding skills. The runs on the mountain's north face usually take place in January, if the skies are clear.
The races in Hahnenkamm are held every year since 1931 and a permanent fixture of the men's World Cup since its inception in the 1967 season. Originally the races took place in March and sometimes in early February; however from 1953, the races at Kitzbühel have been held in mid to late January. From 1959, every year the race has been broadcast on Austrian television. The 69th edition of the race took place on January 23-25, 2009; the next race for 2010 is scheduled for January 22-24.
