To truly slow to an old-world pace, there's no better spot for travelers and locals alike in Satatoga, California to go than over to Hakone Gardens. An extensive and traditional Japanese garden, there is everything from the vast expanse of gardens and koi ponds to a cultural exchange center and various tea houses.

Initially the private retreat of a San Francisco couple with a love for Japanese architecture and landscaping, the gardens were designed in homage to the famous Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. The state of California actually purchased the land, including its buildings and gardens, during the 1960s, fearing that it would fall further into disrepair, as it was already well on its way. The gardens were rejuvenated and then opened to the public.

Travelers in need of peaceful reflection time or just a break from the hustle and bustle of most California cities will enjoy exploring the 18 acres, from the bamboo garden to the strolling garden, with a bridge stretching over the massive koi pond. There are often special events scheduled, too, including different tea traditions and dances, as well as ceremonies. Classes are also held from time to time at Hakone Gardens.

Hakone Gardens is open from ten in the morning until five in the afternoon on weekdays, and from eleven in the morning until five in the afternoon on weekends. It is closed on Christmas and New Year's Day.
