Hala Sultan Tekke is a very important Muslim shrine situated near Larnaca, on the island of Cyprus. According to historical accounts, Umm Haram was the wet nurse of the Islamic prophet Muhammad and the wife of Ubada bin al-SamitUmm Haram, being of very old age; during a siege of Larnaca she had fallen from her mule and had died. She was buried near the salt lake and her grave became a sacred shrine which later developed into a mosque and the whole complex was named after her.
During the Ottoman Empire a mosque was built in stages around the tomb, especially during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The first structure of the shrine was erected by Sheikh Hassan in 1760. Later the mosque was constructed and the complex assumed its present form around the year 1816 1817.
The Hala Sultan Tekke is recognized as a holy site for Turkish Cypriot Muslims and the mosque has been described by secular contemporary sources as being revered by all Muslims. During the Ottoman Empire, Ottoman-flagged ships would hoist their flags at half mast when moored off the shores of Larnaca, and salute Hala Sultan with cannon shots.
