Afro American Cultural Center

Hotels near Afro American Cultural Center, Charlotte (North Carolina), United States .

The Afro-American Cultural Center of Charlotte, North Carolina began in 1974 with the efforts of Mary Harper, an assistant professor of English. Concerned about the lack of organizational efforts to preserve African American history, Ms. Harper took it upon herself to spread the idea of an institution that would do just that. A grass-roots project turned important institution, the Afro-American Cultural Center today is a premier site of art, culture and history.

Several events are held at the center throughout the year, including discussion groups and theatrical presentations. Performing and visual arts programs are also hosted, and facilities are rented for various events.

The Afro-American Cultural Center is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Sundays from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission is $5.00 for adults, $3.50 for children and free for members. Visitors should head to www.aacc-charlotte.org for more information.
