One of the most important cultural and historical landmarks in Knoxville is a simple square in a downtown park with one very lovely sculpture. That small square, known as Haley Heritage Square, is a considerate tribute to one of the most politically important and culturally innovative writers and African-Americans to come from Knoxville.

A celebrated author, hard worker, and family man, Haley would eventually settle down and get around to writing after many years of hard work, including some time in The U.S. Coast Guard, when he was popular for helping other shipmates write letters to their family and girlfriends.

As a freelance journalist, Haley spent time interviewing some of the luminaries in the civil rights movement, including Malcolm X. It was after his work as a journalist doing such interviews that Haley became interested in writing books, starting out with "The Autobiography of Malcolm X," which was completed right before Malcolm X was assassinated.

Alex Haley is best known for writing "Roots," which sold millions of copies and was later turned into a mini-series. Haley Heritage Square was created to honor Haley's memory, and features a bronze sculpture of the author designed by Tina Allen. The square is open during daylight hours and is an important landmark in the United States, as it features the largest sculpture of an African-American in a public space.
