Hamarikyu Gardens

Hotels near Hamarikyu Gardens, Tokyo, Japan .

This is a public park in Tokyo that sits at the mouth of the Sumida River, on what used to be the site of a villa owned by the Tokugawa shogun family in the 17th century. Considered to be one of Japan’s most attractive gardens, the park was opened to the public in 1946 and has Shioiri Pond as its main focal point. Its landscaped gardens are surrounded by a seawater moat which is fed by Tokyo Bay. The park is open via the 2 Northern gates or via the Water Bus, a cruise ship that comes from Asakusa. It is accessible from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. all year round except from December 29 to January 1, for an admission fee of 300 yen.

The garden is known for its placid atmosphere, perfect for visitors who want to escape the hassles of downtown Tokyo. A teashop is located right inside the park for those who want some refreshments; among them is the macha, and traditional Japanese sweets, after a few minutes of strolling. The teahouse sits on an artificial island in the middle of the garden pond. To get to the teahouse, one needs to walk along the 118 cedar walkway that connects the artificial island to the main garden.

The garden is not too far from the main subvway lines. It is just a 15 minute walk away from the JR Shimbashi Station on the Oedeo Subway Line and Yurikamome elevated train. The garden also sits right next to the popular Tsukiji Fish Market.

Hotel accommodations abound near and around Hamarikyu Gardens. These include the Royal Park Shiodome Tower, Park and Conrad hotels.
