Hamburg-Altona

Hambug-Altona is a railway station located in Hamburg, Germany. It is located in the district of Altona, west of the city’s main station, Hamburg Hauptbahnhof and is the terminus for southbound long-distance trains.

Altona’s first railway ran to Kiel (1844, this Altona station was located some 300 metres south of the recent station, now in use as town hall for the Borough of Altona) because was an independent city within the former Duchy of Holstein. The station’s original name was Altona Hauptbahnhof (Altona Central Station).

The actual train station was opened in 1979 and here start and ends Regional and long distance trains at street-level bay platforms within the terminal. The station has two underground island platforms for the city trains of Hamburg S-Bahn. These island platforms are accessible by stairs, escalators and lifts. A bus station with connections to many parts of Hamburg can be found in front of the station.

Altona is the terminus for ICE (InterCityExpress) line 22 to Stuttgart, lines 25 and 28 to Munich, and line 20 to Basle. Germany's national railway company, Deutsche Bahn, run the ICE trains. Number R60 to Husum and Itzehoe and R70 to Neumünster and Kiel regional routes are radiating from here, too.

In the station are located several shops, emergency and information telephones, lockboxes, toilets, ticket machines and personnel.

The rapid transit trains of the Hamburg S-Bahn use the underground station located here and named Altona, too.
