The Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve Park in Honolulu, Hawaii, is a haven for ecological education and preservation. What is presently known as the preserve area was rediscovered by archeologists in 1952, when they were excavating a site containing fishhooks, tools, and ancient campfires. The name “Hanauma,” comes from the native words “hana,” meaning bay, and “uma,” meaning curved.

A cornerstone of the park's preservation movements is the Marine Education Center, which opened in 2002, with the mission of educating young and old alike about the importance of environmental stewardship. Home to some of the most diverse aquatic life and pristine waters, the Nature Preserve's education program is managed by the University of Hawaii Sea Grant College Program. As a part of the program, special public events and evening presentations are put on to discuss marine research and issues with the community.
